Once before the end of the Kruta Yuga, Maya Danava, the father of Mandodari, the father-in-law of Ravana, and the builder of Tripura, wished to know Astronomy, the best of the 6 Vedangas that support the Vedas, he performed penance on Surya Deva (the Sun).
Surya was delighted, but busy, and could not stop, so he designated a man born with his amsa to teach Maya the Surya Siddhantam.
I am thrilled to have found a link to this today : Surya Siddhantam and am very curious to know what is said.
This text predates Sri Rama (who was born in the Tretha Yuga), it is earlier to Aryabhatta‘s Aryabhattiyam and has been also preserved for us by Varahamihira in his Panca Siddhantika.
