Complete List of Vasishtha’s Rg Vedic Mantras. (It includes Vishnu and Rudra).

  1. In the Rg Veda, Vasishtha is called “maitrAvaruni”. While the “literalists” have interpreted this to mean that he had two fathers, to me it is quite clear  that Brahma’s Manasaputra (Mind-Born-son) Vasishtha, was devoted to Mitra (the Sun) and Varuna (the Ocean).
  2. There are also some ‘internet folks’  who wrongly treat Varuna and Mitra as Asuras in the sense of “enemies of the Devas“. Research by Prof P.L. Bhargava shows us that the word Asura meant mighty and acquired negative (enermy-of-the-devas) connotations only later.
  3. There is also a western view, popularized by them itself, that Vishnu was not important in the Vedic Period.  They view the Rg-Veda as one block and ignore the Rshis of the Vedas and their differing beliefs completely. Sri Aurobindo has argued that the importance of a devata is not the number of mantras to their name, but the function of that devata. (In the Valmiki ramayanam, Kausalya, Sri Rama’s mother, always meditates on Vishnu. Valmiki himself frequently compares Sri Rama to Trivikrama, Vishnu and Indra. This is also important because Vasishta was the Rajaguru of the Iksvakus. They did as he taught them, as per their inherited tradition from Vaiwaswatha Manu and the customs of Kosala. This is also a pointer to the importance of Vishnu in the Vedic period.)
  4. Each Vedic Rishi belonged to a different geographical part of India and to slightly differing periods.
  5. For example Viswamitra was from the Kosi River (Bihar), while Gauthama from the western end of Godavari, Tryambakeswar.  Kanva’s Asrama was near Haridwar. Agastya travelled from North to South and Vasishtha went from south, the eastern end of Godavari  to the north (near Sarayu and later Saraswathi).
  6. Thus Vasishtha is the Vedic Rishi who has praised the Ocean more often than anyone else. Vedacharya David Frawley has written a chapter about his research in this area in his book, “Gods, Sages and Kings”. He challenges the assumption made by the Colonial Vedic interpreters that the “Vedic people did not know the ocean because they could not have”  and their  deliberate translation “of Samudra as water instead of as ocean”.

In this article, I am providing the list of Mantras that we have received from Vasishtha, which have been collected into the 7th Mandala of the Rg Veda, by his great grandson Veda Vyasa.

  1. dEvatA – luminary, masculine, singular; dEvatE – two luminaries, masculine, dvivacanam; dEvatAh – many luminaries, masculine, plural

Observations made based on the using the material below :

  1. Vasishta’s son Sakthi lived long enough to compose a suktham of the 7th mandala. (Sakthi was also present at Sita Devi’s oath taking ceremony.)
  2. Agni is also called Vaisvanarah.
  3. savitA, pUSa, bhaga, Adityah are treated as if different from sUrya.
  4. brahmaNaspati is treat differently from brhaspatI
  5. There are hymns to horses (VAjino). (The Asvini twins literally mean those with horses, the aswamedha is a horse sacrifice and Yet “the unnamed folks” insist that there were no horses in India in the Vedic times and ask to accept it as a proven fact).
  6. dEvatA is the one who is worshipped and rshi is the one who composed the mantram, thus for some mantras indra is the rSi and vasiSTa is the dEvatA.
  7. saraswathI is worshipped with saraswAn
  8. parjanya (cloud) is treated as different from indra
  9. The manDukAh (frogs) have their own suktham

Thus we learn that the Devata is the luminary who is the object of worship.  The rshis for these mantras are vasiSTah for his sons and vasiSTaputrAh  indrah va rSayah for Vasishta himself. That means that Vasishta’s sons and Indra worshipped Vasishta and Vasishta worshipped his sons.
