Surya Vamsa and Chandra Vamsa

Vivaswan, the father of Vaivaswatha Manu, has been identified as Surya Deva (The Sun) and is given as the son of Aditi and Kasyapa in the Linga Purana. His dynasty was called the Solar Dynasty – Surya Vamsam. Sri Rama was born in this vamsam. See: Sri Rama’s Lineage as per Agni Purana.

Interestingly Chandra Deva (identified with the moon) is not given in the list of Adityas.

Chandra is said to to be a son of Atri Maharshi, (a son of Brahma) or of the ocean (Ksheera Sagara Mathanam). Chandra’s son Budha married Ila the daughter of Vaivaswata Manu and their son Pururavas inherited Pratishthanapura. This is the Chandra Vamsam. Pururavas, is the ancestor of the Kauravas and Pandavas, which is why they are of the Chandra Vamsam.
