Bhakthi : Desa Bhakthi : Vishnuvardhan, Chitradurga, Malnad and Kannada Charitra – Onake Obavva

I know the title is ambitious, but this is not an exhaustive post.

All fans of Kannada Cinema have a special place in their heart late Sri Vishnuvardhan who passed away recently in Mysore of a heart attack. He was also special to students of M.L.A. girls high school (Malleswaram, Bangalore), because his wife kannada movie star Bharati was an old student. My entire class stood up on the bench to look out of the window, when she came to visit the school one day.

To pay a tribute to him, I decided to select some youtube videos, which showcase his action as well as Karnataka.

The first song “Haavina Dvesha” was shot in Chitradurga fort, in the days before it was “done up” as a world heritage site. It shows an angry young Vishnuvardhan in a real temper at his teacher for punishing him.

The second song, “malanadu henna” shows him wooing a girl on the lovely malnad hills. You can also observe the dress style of the place and time.

The third excellent video shows Vishnuvardhan telling school children, the story of HyderAli’s evil attack on the Chitradurga fort of Madikeri Nayak, and how the lady Obavva, gave her life and saved the fort. The words and visuals tell the story clearly. The part of Onake Obavva is played by movie star Jayanthi.  This story is particularly inspiring to patriotic, brave, young girls. Especially, since the docile side of Indian women is played up so much, it is good to see the telling of the “Durga” side of Indian women. (Parental Guidance is Advised for Viewing This Video).

Now, Sri Vishnuvardhan, is part of Kannada history himself. Our respects to him.
