Yours Truly was hunting for the Niruktha in her Guru’s library.. which she did not find.. but kept coming back to this wonderful book.. which she could no longer ignore..
This is one volume of a big set. It was printed in 1953.
It is supposed to be available at the Digital Library of India but the download failed so I could not get it. This Link Works! Click!!
The author is Asthana Vidwan H.P. Venkata Rao and I think the King of Mysore, Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar paid for the publishing.
The great thing about this book is that it takes off where sAyaNAcArya left off.
It quotes the mantra from the samhita, separates the mantra into words, gives Sayana’s commentary, then a word for word translation into kannada, the entiremantra meaning in kannada and the entire mantra meaning in english.
The english is lovely but unfortunately not always accurate.. (eg he translates nakshatra as planet)
However if you know kannada and are happy with a translation that closely follows Sayana – this is an Excellent Book to read.
So we have traced the Veda Mantras, through Kasyapa’s Nighantus, Yaska’s Niruktha, Sayana Bhasyam and till Venkata Rao’s Kannada/English translation.. each Indian building on the work of a previous Indian…
