Happy Ugadi, Navreh, Gudi Padva, New Year

Today Kannadigas and Telugu people celebrate Ugadi – our new year. I am told that kashmiri pandits celebrate navreh and maharashtrians celebrate gudi padva today.

Today is the first day of the luni-solar month of Chaitra Masam.

It is officially the start of vasanta rtu, though it feels like summer here in bangalore.

We have an adhika vaisakha masa this year.

Jan 1st is the displaced winter solstice celebration, as is Makara Sankramana Uttarayanam and Christmas. (Due to Precession of equinoxes).

Holi, Ugadi, Vasantotsav, Tamil New Year and possibly easter are spring equinox-ish festivals.

Then Gujaratis celebrate New Year, the day after Deepavali, when Karthika Masam starts which is around the autumn equinox. I think Onam occurs around that time

We have reason to be happy all year long. It is bound to be someone’s new year!!
