Are the Vedic people Aryans or Indians?

The colonials propagated the theory that the Vedas belonged to the Aryans and that the Aryans were not Indians but came from outside.

The Bhavishya Puranam tells us that the Vedas are Indian and that the Aryans came to Indian 1000 years after the Bharata War. It tells us that the Aryans learnt the Vedas and that Gautama Buddha was a descendant of the Aryans.

The colonials propagated that Aryans were fair and Dravidians were dark and that they fought each other. The Valmiki Ramayanam tells us that there were more than a dozen different jathis (Vanara, kinnara, naga, rakshasas, nishadas and so on). The Valmiki Ramayanam makes no mention at all of Aryans.

The colonials propagated that the Ramayanam was a northern invasion of the south. Valmiki Ramayanam tells us that Sri Rama befriended all the jathis that he met and he fought only the rakshasas who came from rasatala and no one else. The Vanaras of Hampi Kishkinda were his best friends and fought on his side. And even then he never “took over” Lanka. He installed Vibhishana on the throne and remained friends with him. In fact the rakshasas fought on Bharata’s side against the gandharvas at a much later date. Sri Rama’s territorial expnasion was from east to west.  (Ayodhya (Sarayu) in the east to Mathura in the middle through Satrughna, and upto Takshasila (Sindhu) through Bharata.)

The Bhagavatham tells us that Sri Rama was descended from the Dravideswara Vaivaswatha Manu on his father’s side and that his mother was Kausalya Devi of Kosala.

The noble Aryan theory was popularised by Kalidasa.

Based on all this, I concluded that Aryans were Post-Vedic outsiders who sauntered into India around 2000 BCE and mingled with the local populace and also became Indians like others who came later. I concluded that the Aryans learnt the  Vedas, but the Vedic Rshis were Indians not Aryans and that all these foreigners were simply trying to take credit for the Vedas. I always thought, if the Aryans were capable of achieving the Vedas, how come they could not do it anywhere except in Indian soil? Why does no other country have the Vedas? The Vedas are Indian and foreigners are forever and for always wanting to take credit!!

Today, after a lot of searching for a very long time I came across the word Arya in a mantram by the RSi vAmadEva the son/descendant of Gauthama Maharshi.

When Vamadeva experienced the Brahman, he composed or gave us the following mantras that describe the ecstasy of realising God. He said that he was Manu, Surya, Kakshivan, Kutsa, the kavi us’anA (s’ukrA). RV_04.026.01.

Then he said :  ” I gave the earth to arya” aham bhūmim adadāma aryāya” Please note that in the Vedas it is aryaman and arya NOT aaryamaan and aarya. The leading a is short.

And on this single statement rests the entire case of the Aryan Claim to Vedas.

1. When Vamadeva used the term “Arya” did he mean
   • a man named arya
   • the Indo-European race
   • a noble person?
   • an ancient uttar pradeshi?
   • just any man? (in south Indian languages ayya means father or man or gentleman and can be used for anyone, and it sounds very close to arya  with the hrasva akaara – short a)
   • is there a story that tells us of any Arya that received the earth from God?
   • or did he just mean to a friend or kind man?
2. If the word Arya referred to either a Indian person or an Indian race, then why were the post-vedic late entrants (the 2000 BCE guys of the Bhavishya Puranam called Aryans?)
3. The word arya in the Veda, did not refer to “Indo European – Aryans”

The plot, I tell you my friends,  thickens… and we’ll continue to look for clues.. even as we keep the propaganda guys out …

Another important thing to observe is that the dEvatA of this sUkta is Atma or the Self. It is very important to spiritual seekers and philosophers.

• RV_04.026.03.2 śatatamaṃ veśyaṃ sarvatātā divodāsam atithigvaṃ yad āvam
