Abhyasa : Your area of focus determines your level…
Indra, Sri Rama and Sri Krishna focussed on action. They fought villains and won, they established the jati pourusham or the pride of the race. Whether it was Vrithra, Ravana or Kamsa, their enemies were those who caused harm to the entire race or populace. Where others lost to these enemies or suffered losses on their accounts, these heroes destroyed the common enemies, brought peace to their kind and achieved divinity among personkind.
These men of action become revered as Gods. Into this category, belong Nehru, Gandhiji, Chanakya, Kiran Bedi, Vivekananda and anyone else who DOES something. Their scale of achievement varied from one to another. There is a telugu phrase that says Devudi la vacchavu!
Vasishtha, Viswamitra , Bharadwaja, Gautama and many others focussed on the divine – the divine in men, the divine in nature, the divine in knowledge. These men and women who focussed on divinity and divine people became great Maha RSIs (Rishis, Rushis). They gave us the mantras of the vedas.
These persons of divine knowledge and expression are RSIs. Into this category come Annamacharya, Bhadrachala Ramadasu, Thyagaraja, Purandara Dasa and others particularly in the songs in which they describe divinity and divine experience.
Some persons explained the meaning of Veda Mantras and the processes of the Vedic Yagnyas. These were authors of the upanishads and other texts. I believe they were also called RSIs. Jaimini comes to mind.
Whereas Valmiki and Veda Vyasa became known as itihasa kartas or historians, because they not only focussed on the divinity in the heroes but also on their humanity, their loves, fears, grief, tribulations and victories. They also layered their works with moral, ethical and scientific knowledge.
Kalidasa and others who focussed more on the on the beauty of expression and often wrote to glorify their heroes by their expression and creativity are poets, also called kavi, but not in the same sense as the rishis.
The Acharyas, Sankara, Ramanuja and Madhva, understood the vedas, upanishads, puranas, itihasas and other texts thoroughly and presented their arguments based on these texts. They became the founders of the 3 major schools of philosophy, Advaita, Visisthadvaita and Dvaita.
What are we? And what do we want to be? Koham?
If all we care about is providing for our families and others in the society then we are gruhasthas or householders.
If we focus on science or divinity and contribute some original work in that area.. we are rishis!
If we study and understand what others have done, we are students or scholars.
But if we ACT to solve our problems and those of our people.. and if we succeed, then we are heroes and Gods .. no less!!
Sri Krishnarpanam.
