Truth, Knowledge and Science

leave a comment »

Gravity and Relativity existed before humans knew about them. “Truth” or “Reality” always was.  The “laws of physics” were there before we worked them out.

We know some things through observation and correlation, long before we can explain why or how. eg Black ants scurry into their holes before it rains. We know some things through the words of others we trust. We know some things by experience and somethings by intuition. We deduce some things by logic.

Some part of what we know is based on a body of experimentally verified data and explanations, which we call science.

Most people are not scientists. They trust the scientists to tell them in easy words what they have learnt. This is our ‘popular science’. For most people scientific knowledge is received in the same manner as knowledge received from other people they trust – parents, gurus, friends, family and so on. In the olden days, this was how RSi (rishi) vAkyam  was received. This was how vEda vAkyam was received, by most ordinary people, on trust. This is how we trust our economists, government, historians, teachers, the printed word and so on.

The modern body of scientific knowledge is continually expanding in all directions. It is touching our lives in a million ways. Scientific knowledge is largely reliable., we can trust it.

But it is a subset of the Total Knowledge available to humanity.

Total Knowledge of Humanity – Scientific Knowledge = Knowledge that humanity has which has not been verified by the scientific method.

The unverified knowledge may not be wrong. It may well be right. It is just unverified.  (You may find this interesting in this context : http://oldthoughts.wordpress.com/2009/11/19/brian-josephsons-mind-matter-project-video-lecture/)

The Total Knowledge of Humanity is a subset of Truth or Reality.

Truth or Reality – Total Knowledge of Humanity = Unknown
