Use your common-sense in addition to Dharma Sastras : Brihaspati, bRhaspati, Bruhaspati

Brihaspati said

“kevalam shastram ashritya  na kartavyo vinirnayah

yukti-hina-vicare tu  dharma-hanih prajayate”

Brihaspati is the guru of the dEvAs, the fourth of the list of Veda Vyasas, the planet Guru or Jupiter, the father of Bharadwaja Rishi, Kacha and others, the guru of Suka Muni, the husband of Tara, the cousin and guru of Chandra and the son of Angirasa Rishi (a manasa putra of Brahma).

He said,

“You must not decide what is to be done based on the Sastras alone.

dharma will be harmed if appropriateness/deployability/planning/good sense are  not taken into acount.”

Note :

This is neatly summarised in the telugu movie Mayabazaar as

“sasatarlu sontha thelivi leni vallaki. tasamadiyulu vacchedi attuninchi. andukani paravesas dwaram ate vundali”

See from minute 2:44 of the following movie clip. A good lesson to people destroying their houses based on vaasthu sastram, which was excellent for a different time period and is not fully suited to our time period. Or people destroying their families based on sagothra rules, which were prefect for their kaalam and must be modified for our kaalam.
