Minai’s Cinema Nritya Gharana : A blog about South Indian Movie Classical Dances.. by a White American Lady!

This lady who goes by the internet name Minai, gave a link to my post on Hamsageethe, so I followed it back to her blog post : Hamsa Geethe’s Classical Dance Competition: Translation and Reflection… and I was rather impressed and delighted by all I found..

While I know about Johnny Depp, and Robert Downey Jr and John Cusack.. I never expected a white girl to know about Mahesh Babu, Allu Arjun and Venu Madhav…

I did not expect her to do detailed research into whether Kannada’s Bhukailasa came first or Telugu’s Bhukailas came first. Or to investigate whether Gopikrishna’s dance was reshot or just inserted.

I did not expect her to join a million Andhra girls in breaking their heart over Allu Arjun.

I did not expect that she could feel Bhanupriya’s hopes when she tossed her anklets into the well to avoid dancing lessons in K. Viswanath’s Swarnakamalam..

Could all this have happened before internet, dvds and youtube?

When people of one culture take an enthusiastic interest in the culture of another, it warms my heart. In today’s partially xenophobic existence.. its nice to “meet a stranger who finds you interesting”.

So I have a Canadian Hindu friend who translated the Indra Sahasranama into english and shared it with me, A columbian catholic musician who attended my Bhagavad Gita classes and a Peruvian lady who is fascinated by Sanatana Dharma. Of yes and  a muslim acquaintance who discussed the exact pronunciation of one of the Gita Slokas and the reason thereof!.

Maybe the world is coming to good..  Jai Cultural Openness!
