Isa Vasya Upanishad : Seeing everything in the self and the self in everything : yastu sarvaani bhutani: Sixth Mantram

In the Isa Vasya Upanishad, which is the last part of the Sukla Yajur Veda,  Yajnavalkya says, as he heard from Surya (in the form of an *as’va ),

yah tu : he who

sarvANi bhUtAni : all beings

Atmani eva anupa’yati : sees in the Atman (Self)

sarvabhutESu ca AtmAnam: and in all beings, the Self

tatah : for that reason (perspective)

na vijugupsatE : does not become angry

Sankaracharya explains this as follows in his commentary.

A person who

  • identifies with his pure and eternal Self, the witness or Sakshi to all…
  • and then realises that the aatma of all other beings is the same
  •  and knows that his self is the self of all, then can hate no one
since, it is only the feeling of “otherness” that can cause anger.

What Krishna says in the Gita :

This idea oft repeated in the Bhagavad Gita.

6:29 : sarva bhutastham AtmAnam sarva bhUtAni ca Atmani yoga yukta aatma IkshatE. He who sees the Self in all beings and all beings in the self. 6:30 : yo mAm pas’yati sarvatra sarvam ca mayi pas’yati He who see me everywhere and everything in me 6: 31 : sarvabhUta sthitam mAm ekatvam Asthitah yah bhajati He who worships Me who is situated in all beings, being established in unity. “One who sees his Self in all beings and all beings in his Self and sees Krishna,  everywhere and worships him who is in all beings….. he is a yogi” I take this to mean that Krishna is the atman.

What Narayana Rishi reveals in the Purusha Suktham :

Meaning : RV_10.090.03.2{17} pādo.asyaviśvā bhūtāni tripādasyāmṛtaṃ divi :  all the living beings comprise but one fourth of the Purusha and that the immortal heavens comprise three fourths of the puruSa.

What I think :

Adi Guru Sankara, Jagadguru Sri Krishna and Yagnyavalkya tell us that one who sees his Self in all and the self of all as his Self or in his Self or as Krishna, will have no hatred or is an Advaitin or a Yogi.

This mantra gives us a point for Abhyasa. Either

1) see Krishna in all beings

2) all things in Krishna

3) or your Self in all beings

4) AND see THEM in your Self.

According to me the fourth point is the hardest.

Footnotes :

*In this context reconsider the term asva-medha not as horse-fat, but as spiritual knowledge and intellect. See where that thought takes you.
