This lovely song from the movie Nagin… shows how a beautiful girl is captivated by beautiful music… The “kaun baje baasuriyaan” is reminiscent of Krishna’s flute attracting the girls of Vrindavan. At the end of the song you see how the girl is just one feeling of involved yearning.
In the next song, you have the girl begging the charmer to let her go home, since it was very late.. a theme that occurs in other hindi movie songs of the sixties (eg abhi na jao chodkar).
And then you have her heart calling out to him after the “evil society” that is “anti-love” separates them and ties her up. I learnt this song from my cousin sister and used to love singing it all the time.
Perhaps it is the fact that I am in love with love itself, that I want all the “Rama-Sitas” of the world to be together and have happy endings. Perhaps it is the poet in me that refuses to see that many couples are in fact unhappy together whether in love marriages or arranged marriages. Perhaps it is the “Love Aaj Kal”s that have a better idea of reality. All I know is I am very fed up of the way that women are objectified as some kind of hero-accessories in much main stream commercial cinema of today.
I like them old Hindi movies like Nagin!
