Isa Vasya Upanishad : The truth behind the golden orb: Hiranmayena Patrena : Fifteenth Mantram
In the Isa Vasya Upanishad, which is the last part of the Sukla Yajur Veda, Yajnavalkya says,
hiraNmayEna pAtrENa : by a vessel (lid) of gold
satyasya apihitam mukham : the face of truth (reality) is covered
tat tvam pUSan apAvRNu : that O Nourisher (pooshan, the sun), remove
satyadharmAya dRSTayE : for the vision of satya (truth, an attribute of reality, of existence) and dharma (that which must be borne) or satyadharma (the true dharma)
What does Sankaracharya say?
That vessel of gold refers to the brilliant golden light of the sun, (which makes it difficult for us to look at him). The truth this brilliance hides is the brahman. That I ask the nourisher, the Sun to remove for the sake of me, satya-Dharmaa, one whose Dharma is the truth – “sah aham : soaham” – “he I am”
What do I think?
This is a favorite mantra of mine. It is used by the Vivekananda Yoga Kendra before teaching Surya Namaskaras.
I am a seeker of the dharma that is Truth (Reality). But it is all hidden by brilliant illusions. O Nourisher! I need your help, remove this brilliant covering so that I may see, You, the Truth.
