Current Affairs : Stand up and be counted : I remember… : Kavana Sarma

The Squirrel Helped Rama Build The Bridge to Lanka, by rolling in the mud and then rolling on the bridge, a few grains of sand at a time. Rama was so pleased that he rubbed the squirrel's back with his fingers and that is how the squirrel has stripes on his back.
Varun Gandhi said today that he wanted to table Anna’s Jan Lokpal Bill as a private member’s bill in the parliament, because he wanted to “Stand Up and Be Counted” and “do something that he could uniquely do.”
I like his measured words. That is exactly how I feel. If my grandchildren ask me tomorrow what I did to ensure a corruption free country for them and in what way I supported Anna Hazaare… what can I tell them? What competency do I have? In what way can I be useful to my country in this cause? I don’t know.
I asked my grandfather what he did in the independence struggle. He said that they spun Khadi and did not wear foreign clothes and did what Gandhiji asked them to do.
My father shared his contributions to various causes on his blog, which I have reproduced below.
Ab meri baari hai! What will I do to free my country from corruption? Yes Sankalpa and Prayer, but what Effort? Parasara says One Must Make an Effort too!

I remember
The day India became independent, at the age of 7 I roamed in the streets of Vizag wearing a tricolour flag along with my friends..
The day Gandhi was killed and the Whole nation wept…
I remember the republic day on which I could not participate in the school ( ULCM at Rajamundry) function being down with dysentery…
I remember the day Potti Sriramulu died and days of agitation that followed , how we were excited and also scared of the iron topi wearing Malabar police deployed by the government…
I remember the Goa liberation agitation I lead with Jogaih Pantulu when at Mrs AVN College..I remember myself and Vittal Rao Fasting on the Indian Institute of science campus against the domination Of Hindi over the other languages in 1964…
I remember the days of blackouts during Pakistan war 1965..
I remember my father sending me a telegram during emergency asking me if I am out or in ( JAIL)…
I remember myself and U.R. Prasad standing in the queues at Malleswaram booth in Bangalore to vote for K.S. Hegde in the general election after emergency before it opened so that no one else could cast our votes… (1977)
I remember leading an agitation at IISc against mighty Satish Dhawan for quarters for faculty by simply skipping the official lunch and winning the point…
I wish the younger generation will fight for their future and against corruption.
I do not want to remember some time in future – Anna Hazaare’s agitation against corruption in which I have not participated…
