Subhashita : Bhartruhari : Svartha, Parartha : For the Self, For Others : Ete Satpurushah

This is a subhashita by Bhartuhari, a great philosopher, the brother if Raja Vikramaditya of Ujjain.

ete satpuruShAH parArthaghaTakAH svArthAn parityaja ye sAmAnyAstu parArthamudyamabhR^itaH svArthAvirodhena ye | te.amI mAnavarAxasAH parahitaM svArthAya nighnanti ye ye tu ghnanti nirarthakaM parahitaM te ke na jAnImahe || sandhi vigraha

ete satpuruShAH para artha ghaTakAH svArthAn.h parityaja ye sAmAnyAH tu parArthaM udyama bhR^itaH svArtha avirodhena ye | te amI mAnava rAxasAH parahitaM svArthAya nighnanti ye ye tu ghnanti nirarthakaM parahitaM te ke na jAnImahe || (source)

These are the good people (satpurushas), who sacrifice their welfare and are engaged in the welfare of others. (Team Anna)

The ordinary try to help others, without any conflict to their self interest. (many of us).

They are rakshasas in human form, who sacrifice the welfare of others for their own self-interest. (the corrupt).

But those who destroy the welfare of others to no purpose at all, I don’t know who they are!
