This book  Science & Technology in India Through the Ages, is published by the Academy of Sanskrit Research, Melkote. It is priced at Rs 1000 but I got it for Rs 600 or Rs 400 at Yathiraj Mutt, next to Malleswaram Veg Market (14th cross, Sampige Road, Malleswaram, Bangalore).

I don’t back the dates they have given for the rishis, at this time, because I am still working them out for myself as you know., BUT.,

What I really liked about this book, is that they give the veda mantra/darsana sloka/etc, the translation and then their explanation in each essay on each topic in science. They also tell you the reference so you can find the mantra/sloka in the original text for yourself. This is very helpful to researchers as as well as to children/beginners. The language is understandable english. Its a nice big hard bound book with nice paper and pictures – so its a good gift too!

Since it has both data and explanations, you can use it to study and make up your own mind! This book gives the scientific or adhbhautik translations of the mantras and slokas where as other books focus only on adhidaivik (divine) or adhyatmik (spiritual) translations.

The Academy says : “Science & Technology in India through the Ages” is a book written in a simple yet easy to understand style. The book traces the developments in different fields of science from ancient times to modern times. It analyses the requirements of modern times and how the same could be benefited by capsules ancient wisdom.

Unique, because the book attempts to unlock the mysteries of the past,  compares the ancient visions and results of modern research based experiments and place the facts before the public in an unbiased way for their critical study and judicial implementation in life.Covering a wide range of chapters from Agriculture to Ayurveda to Architecture: the book has 5 sections and 22 chapters. Chapters are grouped into Sections and are subdivided for clarity Suitable illustrations make the study interesting. The book is thought simulating and follows a subtle pattern.Efforts are made to give all documents on ancient wisdom with proper references to the stanza, the book, the author etc. This brings in certain discipline and ease in identifying the ancient books.

This Sanskrit Academy also published many books on Visishtadvaita which appeals to some people more than Advaita does. And some festival days you get 50% off if you go to the temple in person!

This diagram from their site from gives an idea of what you might in the library.
