Great things repeat on Good Days! Our Story For Deepavali, our reason for celebration, is how Satyabhama, an avataar of Bhudevi, mother earth and Krishna’s wife killed Narakasura! Of course the legend you believe depends on where you grew up. Obama says that it marks the victory celebrations of Rama killing Ravana, and that could also be so!
Be that as it may, all of Karthika Masam the streets were and are lit with lamps so that travellers are benefitted.
Last karthika masam I was blessed to visit both Mahakaleswar in Ujjain and Mamaleswar in Omkareshwar!

Needless to say I love this movie clip! Satyabhama is always taking on Rukmini, always wanting Krishna all to herself, and never winning and never learning, but still loved dearly by Krishna never-the-less! So human and well ‘earthy’, right? – she is after all mother earth!
It also interests me that we celebrate the victory of the earth – Bhudevi with light – Lakshmi devi!
