abhyAsa : Who are you in relation to yourself?

One of my parents’s friends Smt. Bhupati Naidu, volunteers time with cancer terminal patients. She dropped in suddenly one day and asked us – Who are you in relation to yourself. Please don’t give me roles. Mother, daughter, manager etc. These are what you are to other people. When you have no husband, you are no longer a wife. Before you gave birth, you were not a mother, etc.

Who am I in relation to myself?
I am not my wife, mother, daughter, superior or subordinate!

I am a learner. I like learning about different things and new things and in depth!

I like to entertain myself with music and books and movies and dance.

I like travelling and meeting interesting people and seeing interesting places.

If I had no duties to others, who would I be? Can I even think of myself not in relation to others? Am I so socialised?
