Vedas : What does Veda Mean?

Centuries of scholars have defined the term vEda, variously.

In summary, we have these meanings of the root vid, which are, to know, to be, to gain and to consider (vicAra).

So we can choose to understand vEdAs as texts which help us to consider what is, to know that and gain the results of that knowledge.

This will then include your physics textbook and while it is an interesting train of thought, it is not a practical definition to students like us.

So sAyaNAcArya said that we should consider mantra samhitAs and brAhmaNAs as vEdAs.

Which makes it necessary for us to define what these words mean.

(In this context brAhmaNAs refer to texts and not to the caste that some hate, some respect, some wish to destroy, and some wish to protect).
