Vedas : Mantra, brAhmaNa, and other definitions : H. P. Venkata Rao

Jaimini said, taccodakESu mantrAKyA, s’ESE brAhmaNa s’abdah.

sAyaNAcArya concluded that those sentences used by the traditional experts to determine what karma to do in yAgAs and yagnyAs and those that praise the dEvatAs are the mantrAs and that the rest of the sentences are brAhmaNAs.

The traditional experts say that the prEraka vAkyAs of the vEdAs are mantrAs and the rest (paris’iSta) are brAhmaNAs.

mantrAs or samhitAs differ in style, Chandas, and viSaya from the brAhmaNAs.

Together, samhitAs and brAhmaNAs constitute the vEdAs.
