There are totally 10552 Rks in the Rg Veda . Max Muller counted them as 10520 – what he did was, he counted some dvipadaa mantraas as half a mantra each in the Rg Veda. In the other vedas he corrected himself and did not make this error.
A pada is usually quarter of mantra, except in dvipadaa mantraas where it is half a mantra. (Reference : H.P. Venkata Rao).
