Photos : Jaya and Vijaya : Dwarapalakas of Vishnu

Jaya and Vijaya (literal meaning victory) guard the dwara or entrance to vaikunTam, the world of the omni-present viSNu.

Having seriously annoyed a RSi, they were cursed to be reborn on earth, thrice as Vishnu’s enemies or seven times as his devotees. They chose the shorter separation and were born as,
- hiraNyAkSa (the doe eyed one :) ) and hiraNyakas’ipu who were killed by varAha and narasimha avataaraas of Vishnu respectively
- rAvaNa and kumbhakarNa slain in the rAmAvatAra
- s’isupAla and dantavakra slain by kRSNa.

I took these pictures at Sri Bala Anjaneyaswamy temple, near MSRIT hospital gate on New Bel Road.

Jai Hanuman!
