About : So Happy : Thatha and the Magic Grain : Braille Release : Pictures

When kanna was a little boy, he wanted a new story every day. Thatha and the magic grain was the story that told itself one wonderful night. Neither Amma nor Kanna could forget that lovely story.

One day when Kanna was in high school, Amma went to a school for blind girls, to volunteer some time. There was a very nice principal there. He said – you can teach them science. Amma tried to explain colour to the girls and realised for the first time what it was!

It is energy just like the heat, which you can feel with your skin but people who have eyes can pick up this energy from far away without touching it, and they can tell which bits have more energy.

Then she realised that, while the girls at this school could not detect light, there were bunches of energy that people cannot detect at all.

And just as many things are translated to touch and sound for these girls, many things were translated to light and sound for other people. (I’ve expanded on this idea in Extending your senses. – read that article if you like).

As always whenever Amma tries to help anyone, she gets helped instead – majorly.

The principal also told amma, that he had a braille printer, and that if she could give him some nice stories for children, then he would type them up so children could practice reading. He also was very particular the stories should not be preachy ones, which is what some religious organisations give.

Amma got around to writing many years after this conversation. After retelling the stories that Valmiki and Vyasa had written, she felt she had to write a story of her very own.

She wrote down Thatha and the Magic Grain and put it on her blog.

She asked Sai Padma aunty to give a printout to that nice principal so he could type it for the children.

Now as we know already, its hard for aunty to stand, let alone walk, but she set aside a day and went and gave the stories to the principal.

Finally, Amma kept up her word and after seven years the stories were told to the children and printed in braille.

In the pictures you can see the principal, giving the braille books to aunty. And one book will be posted to amma for her to see and to show off!!!

And aunty said Varanasi and Agra want 150 copies between them. And that the story is being translated into telugu and hindi!!!

Can you believe the wonderful songs amma’s heart is singing? As beautiful as Thatha’s songs!!

Amma found her magic grain!!!
