At the end of the first chapter, we learned that bhagwAn viSNu, in the form of a kUrma, that savior of the people, that dEva who had gone to rasAtala , when questioned by nArada and other rishis, spoke the entire, excellent kUrma purANam.

Chapter 2.

s’rI kUrma said,

“I am nArAyaNa dEva. There was no one beyond me in the past. After my vipula nidrA, extensive sleep, as I lay contemplating creation, I felt an excessive joy and the four-faced Brahma, the grandfather of the world came to be. Then I felt angry and mahEs’wara rudra dEva, with a s’Ula in his hand and three eyes, with the brilliance of the sun, looking like he could burn up the three worlds in anger, came into being.

Then the lotus eyed s’rI dEvI came into being. Of beautiful form and face, who fascinates all embodied ones, with a pure smile, well-pleased, auspicious, full of greatness-es (miracles), full of divine radiance, shining with divine garlands,nArAyaNi, mahAmAyA, mUlaprakRti, the unchanging one.

Filling the world with her brilliance, She came and sat next to me. Then BhagwAn brahmA, the lord of the world said, “Maadhava! Please engage this lovely lady in fascinating all the beings, by which my entire creation will grow!”.

Then I smilingly said to dEvI, “By my order, please fascinate the entire universe along with all the mAnuSAs , devAs and asurAs and make them fall into samsAra (worldly ways)!

‘But please exclude the following.

‘Those engaged in gnyAnayOga, those dedicated to the brahman, the truthful, the un-angered,those studying the vEdAs, vEdAnta, vignyAna, destroying all their doubts, those  performing great yagnyAs, brahmins, those who meditate, who are peaceful, who are dhArmik, and those who seek support of the vEdAs. Please make an effort to leave unfascinated – Those who worship dEva dEva maheS’wara with japa or hOma, self-study, yagnya (worshipful action), bhakti yOga, who have dedicated their minds to Is’vara, who love prAnAyAma etc, who are pure.

‘Those whose minds are interested in praNava, rudrajapa, those who know dharma, those who know the atharva vEda – please exclude them.

‘Those who protect/practice their svadharma, those who are engaged in adoring Is’vara please leave alone by my order.”

Thus was the darling of Hari sent forward by Me.

She did as I said.  She gives plenty of welfare, prosperity, brilliance, strength and fame when worshiped. This is why Lakshmi, the wife of the bhagwAn must be worshipped well.

s’rI paramAtmanE namah! harih um!

Kurma Puranam : 11 : The Rishis ask Vishnu to teach them the Kurma Purana, which He taught Indradyumna.

An idealized turtle divides the sky into 6 equal areas (60 degrees), Varahamihira and others have referred to this cosmic turtle in this sense. The 8 diggajas or 8 directional elephants divide the sky into 8 equal parts (45 degrees). Thus points are marked at 45, 60, 90, 120, 135, 180, 225, 240, 270, 300, 315 and 360 along the cosmic circle. The tortise thus bears the elephants, in an astronomical interpretation of this description, consistent with Vyasa's way of encoding vedic knowledge into puranas. On this you have the 7 saptarishis, nagas and so on. Terry Pratchett literalizes this in his discworld novels, but for the longest time, that has been the only western understanding of this astronomical model. It also interests me that the Guruji has placed Siva atop this mandara mountain, perpendicular to the circle. That is a clue! Ever since I studied the Purusha Suktham, I always face North along the pole star to chant my Vishnu Sahasranama - that is where I located the other 3 padas of the Purusha, one pada pervades this manifest uniferse, in its unmanifest form. In this context of paratattva, there is no difference between members of the trimurthi, devi, brahman and any other name. This is an area that needs more thought and working out on my part. - Satya. Then rOmaharSaNa sUta, said,

“Thus explained by Hari (Vishnu), Narada and the other RSis (Rishis, Rushis, Scientists, Explorers and Philosophers) alond with s’akra (Indra (Hero, God, Astronomical Point, War Strategist)), questioned that one-of-the-garuDa-flag (Vishnu).

The rishis said,

” Oh dEva (luminary) of the dEvAs, one who has controlled his senses, lord, pure nArAyaNa, tell us that, which was told by you of old, to the wise (vipra) Indradyumna, knowledge that is beyond (unfindable by) dharma and other (Purusharthas – Human Goals).

Even your friend s’akra, is eager to hear O jaganmaya (one who pervades the moving world – jagat!)”

Then that bhagwAn viSNu, in the form of a kUrma, that savior of the people, that dEva who had gone to rasAtala , questioned by nArada and other rishis, spoke the entire, excellent kUrma, purANam.

{As per nArada purANa: the seven lower worlds are atala, vitala, sutala, talatala, mahatala, rasatala and patala.}

I will tell you, that pure (purANa), wonderful (dhanyam), fame giving, longevity giving, which gives which gives Moksha to people.

It is special to listen to or tell this purANa. Having heard even one chapter (adhyAya) of  this, one is saved from all pApAs (vikarma – wrong deeds).  (Listening to) Even one upAkhyAna (episode, story), will give brahmalOka.

{bhuubhuvassvarmahasjanastapas, and satya (brahma loka) are the seven higher lOkAs.}

This ultimate kUrma purANa told by the adhidaiva of the dEvAs, in his form of a kUrma, must be learned with s’raddhA by the twice born.”

Thus ends, the first adhyaya of the of the first division of six thousand s’lokas of s’rI kUrma purANa.

Time for your little good deed!

Kurma Puranam : 10 : Indradyumna sees Brahma and attains Moksha by crossing over maya (8)

Brahma : From Art of Krishna on Facebook

Indradyumna contemplated on the grandfather (pitAmaha brahma), the refuge of all those with bodies, the dEva who is without beginning or end, the dEva of the dEvAs.

Then, there appeared, in that (contemplation), the light of the paramAtma (the ultimate self) and in the middle of that (light) he saw, that ultimate state the primordial (pUrva) puruSa.

That great beam of brilliance, unattainable by those who know the brahma, with four faces, and good limbs, decorated by rays.

Then that universal self (vis’vAtmA), saw the yOgI who had approached and bowed down and the dEva Himself rose up and embraced (Indradyumna).

Then that Indra among the twice born, who was thus embraced, emanated a great light from his body and entered

That pure  Aditya manDala, named as Rk, yajuh and sAma, which was and free from faults (dirt – mala).

That entrance, where exists the Bhagwan, hiranyagarbha (the golden-wombed one), who consumes havya (offerings to in the Vedic Fire) and kavya (offerings to forefathers (pitarah) made in funeral ceremonies), that which is the first for the yOgIs, which is established in vEdantA, which is made of brahma’s tejas (brilliance), auspicious (s’rIman), and is the niSTA (steadiness, firmness) of humans.

The resplendent (made of rays – arcirmaya) muni (indradyumna), just having been seen by that bhagwAn brahmA, saw the brilliant power (ais’warya), which was peaceful (s’Antam), all pervading (going everywhere) and was good (s’ivam).

That final state of Vishnu, the paramEs’vara (the ultimate lord as per whose will the moving world moves), the self of the indestructible, immovable space (vyoma), blissful (Anandam), the place of brahma,

mandara dhAre, mOksha murAre, daitya kulAntaka, pAvana mUrthe, pada s'ubha, rEkha makuTa mayUra..

He attained That state called mOkSa, the residence of the self, being one who was the self of all beings and having arrived at the highest ais’varya (splendour, lordship, power). (I think ais’warya means attribute of I’swara).

Thus by all efforts, that learned one who practiced the vidhi (rules) of varnAs’rama, having reached the ultimate bhAvam (idea), crossed over mAyA, lakSmI.

A karnatik geetam : mandara dhAre! to Sri Kurma!

Just one correction in the following video, dhArE is incorrectly pronounced as dArE (alpa prANa is pronounced instead of mahAprANa).

Also as per pANinI’s s’ikshA, s’ubha cannot be pronounced subha or Subha, the air must pass between the tip of the tongue and the upper palate very close to your front teeth. Other than this the teaching style, the idea, swara sthAnAs everything I like very much.
