King Janamejaya was the son of Pariksit, who was Abhimanyu’s son, who was Arjuna’s and Subhadra’s son and Sri Krishna’s nephew.
Arjuna was Yudhisthira’s brother, so that makes Janamejaya the great-grandson of Yudhisthira. Janamejaya learnt the story of the Mahabharatam from Vaisampayana. Vaisampayana was a disciple of Veda Vyasa.

The year when Vyasa began writing the Mahabharatam titled ‘Jaya’ is called Jayabhyudaya Yudhisthira Sakam. That year is also year 1 of Kaliyuga. Parikshit died in in Kaliyuga 60. Then Janamejaya was coronated the king. His Dana Sasana Patram (Gift Decree Letter) is given below.
” Sri Kuru Vamsavatamsa Sri janamejaya Bhoopalanam Dana Sasana Patram.

89 years, after Vyasa started writing the Mahabharata (Jaya), Janamejaya, (Arjuna’s great grand son), made a gift of land to a saint, near the Tungabhadra. Janamejaya ruled in Kishkinda (Hampi). Janamejaya worshipped Sita, Rama and Hari (Vishnu) and Hara (Siva).

- Dhaumya’s student’s student Udanka incited Janamejaya to perform a Sarpa yaga to avenge Parikshit’s death.
