Vaivaswatha Manu to Viswamitra : Srimad Bhagavatam

Ganesha by Rajan

Viswamitra or Kausika was from Bihar/Nepal… near the Kosi river. Kosi or Kausi was said to be his sister.

Viswamitra‘s father was Gadhi. Viswamitra’s sister Satyavati was the grandmother of Parasurama परशुराम.

From the Srimad Bhagavatam 9.15.1-4, we learn that :

  1. Gadhi’s father was Kusambu and Kusambu’s brothers were Tanaya, Vasu and Kusanabha. (Were the Kushans descendants of this dynasty? )
  2. The descendants of Pururava and Urvasi were Vijaya, Bhima, Kancana, Hotraka, Jahnu (after whom Ganga is named as Jahnavi), Puru, Balaka, Ajaka, Kusa, Kusambu, Gadhi, Viswamitra (Kausika)

We know that Pururava was the son of Ila who was the daughter of Vaivaswatha Manu and Budha who was the son of Chandra who was the son of Atri, the son of Brahma,  (Pratishthanapura: Capital of Satavahanas and of Sudyumna / Ila).

Thus both Viswamitra and Rama were descendants of Vaivaswatha Manu, Rama was of the Ikshvaku branch and Viswamitra was of the Ila/Sudyumna branch.

Adhiratha (Karna’s foster father) was in the line of Anga (per Srimad Bhagvatham)

All of us are moved and upset by incident where Bhima calls Karna a SutaPutra and tells him to go mind horses!

We have always accepted that Karna’s foster-father Adhiratha was a Suta. Yet, in the Srimad Bhagavatham I found the following lineage of Adhiratha. He is descended from Yayati, through Anga and Rompada as given below, and is therefore related to Sri Krishna.

We are also impressed by the “gift” of Anga Desa by Duryodhana to Karna, and yet it appears that it rightfully belongs to Adhiratha, by his lineage! Please Read On!

Source/Reference (Srimad Bhagavatham) : Adhiratha’s Lineage :

  • Yayati, Anu (brother of Yadu), Sabhanara, Kalanara, Srinjaya
  • Mahasala, Mahamana, Titikshu, Rushadratha, HomaSutapa, Bali (by the grace of Dirghatama)
  • Anga, Khalapana, Diviratha, Dharmaratha,
  • Romapada (aka Citraratha), (had by the mercy of Rishyasringa), Caturanga,
  • Prithulaksha, Brihadratha, Brihanmana, Jayadratha, Vijaya, Dhriti, Dhritavrata, Satkarma, Adhiratha.

Romapada was the friend of Dasaratha. Dasaratha gave his daughter Santa, in adoption to Romapada. Santa was married to Rsyasringa, who performed the Putrakameshti yagam for Dasaratha. Then Sri Rama, Lakshmana, Bharata and Satrughna were born.

Analysis :

  1. Thus Sri Rama was much younger than his sister and brother-in-law. Caturanga would be of Sri Rama’s generation.
  2. Prithulaksha, Brihadratha, Brihanmana, Jayadratha, Vijaya, Dhriti, Dhritavrata, Satkarma, Adhiratha, Karna (by adoption).
  3. This lineage puts Karna  about 10 generations down from Sri Rama.
  4. Anga, was an ancestor of Adhiratha and therefore Karna had inheritance rights on Anga Desa. Did Duryodhana gift or return Anga to Karna?
  5. This Bali, father of Anga cannot be the Mahabali, grandson of Prahlada, son of Virochana.

anga – Angavanga – Vangakalinga – Kalingaadyah — headed by; suhma – Suhmapundra – Pundraodra – Odrasamjnitah — known as such; jajnire — were born; dirghatamasah — by the grace of Dirghatama; baleh — of Balikshetre — field; mahi-kshitah — of the king of the world.
