Maheswara Sutras

with one comment

When Maheshwara, Siva, Sambhu, played his damaru, the Sanatkumaras, the sons of Brahma, recorded the following sounds. Panini wrote about Sambhu Mata in his Siksha (phonetics) and also about Maheswara Sutras in his vyakarana (grammar). This is how I came to know about the Maheswara Sutras. While, the story says that sounds emanated from the damaru, Sri Achyut Karve, explained to me that the damru was for laya (rythym, beat) and the sounds in the sutras systematically follow the different places in the mouth at which each different kind of sound is made.

He was kind enough to record for us the Maheshwara sutras without and with the damaru, so that we know how they need to be pronounced, actually chanted in a way. He explained the importance of rythym and hand movements in language and the significance of using the pendulum based damaru for timing in the Maheswar Sutras. I was blessed to have the this tele-lesson from him  on the third Karthika Somavasara of this month.. another of the myriad blessings that Siva has showered upon me.

Please listen carefully to the entire recording. Sri Karve is long time practioner of the tabla and that led him to the Maheshwara Sutras.
